On this Date in Minnesota History: July 22

July 22, 1916 – Many forest fires have broken out in Northern Minn. The state forestry department today received reports of fires in Northern St. Louis County, Cook and Koochiching Counties.

Cook County reports heavy fires on the Canadian side with smoke pouring densely as far south as Grand Marais.

All available men have been called out by Ranger Orr of St. Louis County to fight a fire in the Virginia and Rainy Lake Woods.

A large tract of timber owned by the International Lumber Company near Ray, Koochiching County, has been destroyed.
