On This Date in Minnesota History: April 15

April 15, 1982 - Completed on Sept. 1, 1922 at a cost of $850,000, the current Stearns Courthouse, St. Cloud, Minn., was placed on the National Register of Historical Places on this date.

Stearns County Courthouse, St. Cloud, Minn.*

Some interesting facts about the courthouse are:

• The building originally had separate dormitories, washrooms and “shower
baths” for male  and female jurors.

• Rest rooms used to be designed so they were accessible on Sundays and
holidays, with an ornamental steel grille that stretched out to bar access
to the rest of the building.

• The building originally had a kitchenette equipped with a gas stove
designed so farmers’ wives could cook or warm food for themselves
and family members when they came to town on shopping trips.

• In 1992, Hollywood filmmakers used the ceremonial courtroom and
second floor rotunda to film scenes of “the Mighty Ducks,” starring
  Emilio Estevez.
