On This Date in Minnesota History: April 25

April 25, 1959 – The St. Lawrence Seaway, “a system of locks, canals and channels that permits ocean-going vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, as far inland as the western end of Lake Superior,”1 opened on this date.2
