On This Date in Minnesota History: May 23

May 23, 1965 – A memorial to St. Paul native Captain Richard E. Fleming was dedicated on this date at the South St. Paul Municipal Airport by the Marine Corp Reserve Officers Association (MCROA).

The airport is named Fleming Field after Captain Fleming, “a Navy pilot during World War II. He was, posthumously, presented the congressional medal of honor for his actions during [the Battle of Midway] on June 5, 1942.”<sup>1
