On This Date in Minnesota History: July 17

July 17, 1902 - Willis Carrier designed the first modern air-conditioning system that changed the way we work, live and play. Carrier’s invention, solved the problem of how to control the indoor environment, and helped promote health, comfort and global productivity.1

The first residential application of air conditioning was used in the Minneapolis, Minn., mansion of Charles G. Gates,1 a tycoon who had made his fortune in barb wire, railroads and oil.3 Considered by many to be one of the, if not the largest mansion in Minneapolis, the home overlooked Lake of the Isles; it was demolished in 1933.3
