On This Date in Minnesota History: July 12

July 12, 1912 – “Three persons are dead and thirteen injured and a property loss of $100,000 was caused by one of the most severe storms in years [that] raged over Hennepin and Ramsey counties (Minneapolis and St. Paul).”1

Shade trees were uprooted or branches broken off. Roofs of buildings were lifted and great timbers were sent crashing through adjoining buildings.

Windows, signs and awnings downtown Minneapolis were smashed and torn down. The rush of water filled sewers causing a torrent to back up and flood basements and restaurants.

Wires leading to all points out of the Twin Cities were down. The Western Union Telegraph Company reported that their lines to Duluth, Winnipeg, Fargo and Chicago were all in bad condition, making it difficult to send or receive messages.
