On This Date in Minnesota History: August 8

August 8, 1901 – John McCarthy, a farmer of Inver Grove township, a former resident of St. Paul, with several relatives living in that city, was dead in the road near Westcot this morning. His team was hitched to a fence. The body was taken to St Paul today and will be interred tomorrow.

McCarthy wen to St. Paul yesterday on business, and returned home in the evening. Near Westcot the horse got frightened by a woman who appeared in the road with a wheelbarrow, and McCarthy fell out of the wagon backwards. The woman told Aug. Wellbach about the accident, and he went to the man’s assistance. Believing that McCarthy was drunk, he dragged him to the side of the road, and after hitching the horse, returned home.

In the morning, Wellbach saw the horse and wagon, and went over to the place and found McCarthy dead. He then notified the family of the deceased, and Coroner Kramer, of Dakota County, decided that death resulted from heart failure.

McCarthy was 62 years old, and had lived in this section of the state for 40 years. He was a Civil War veteran, and leaves a widow and five children.

The Minneapolis Tribune; “Found Him Dead; Fall From His Wagon Kills John M’Carthy, a Farmer. Resided in Inver Grove Township, and Was En Route Home When Accident Occurred.”; Aug. 9, 1901; p. 5.
