On This Date in Minnesota History: September 27

September 27, 1906 – Charles Fullerton, 51 years old and well known in Bemidji, was instantly killed yesterday around 11 a.m., about a mile and a half north of Puposky, Minn., being run over by a train on the Minneapolis, Red Lake & Manitoba Railway.

A painter by trade, Fullerton had been to Puposky and walked from that place to collect some money that was due him at the home of a friend a mile and a half north of Puposky. He was returning to Puposky walking in the middle of the railroad track, when he was hit by a train. The train crew saw the man walking on the track, but as the latter was deaf, he did not hear the train approaching and did not attempt to move from between the rails.

Every effort was made to stop the train, but it was not possible. Fullerton was picked up from between the engine and the first car on the train and an examination showed that he was badly hurt about the head, that both arms were broken and that he was injured internally.

The train was immediately headed for Bemidji and the body brought there. The injuries caused instant death.

No blame can possibly be attached to the railroad company or any of its employees.

September 26, 1837 – “A treaty is signed in Washington D.C. between Secretary of War Joel Poinsett and leaders of the Mdewakanton Dakota, who cede lands east of the Mississippi for $300,000. This amount is paid in yearly installments consisting of $5,000 cash, $10,000 goods $8,250 for agricultural implements, medicines and support of a physician, blacksmiths, and farmers, plus $5,500 in provisions. The Dakota are required to move further west.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 25

September 25, 1918 – Backus, Minn., a Cass County village situated nine miles north of Pine River, was visited by a disastrous fire on this date. The home and garage of Frank Hayes, John Hayes’ confectionery, the office of Charles Griffith and the two-story poolroom of Edward Elyea, just built, were destroyed, at a total loss of about $10,000.

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 22

September 23, 1862 – “On September 19, 1862, Col. Henry Hastings Sibley set out from Fort Ridgely with 1,500 volunteers to put down the Santee [Sioux] uprising. As they neared Wood Lake [in Yellow Medicine County] on [this date], Sibley’s men escaped an ambush by 700 warriors under Chief Little Crow and engaged them in a battle. Sibley’s force won the day inflicting heavy casualties on the Sioux. For this action, Sibley received a promotion to brigadier general. Wood Lake was the first decisive defeat of the Sioux since the uprising began.”

September 21, 1922 – Memorial Plaque in Fond du Lac, Minn.

“Fond du Lac – Minnesota.

Site of Ojibway Village from earliest known period. Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Luth was here in 1679. Astor's American Fur Company established a trading post on this spot about 1817. First Ojibway Treaty in Minnesota made here in 1826.

This monument was erected by The Daughters of the American Revolution, Duluth, Minnesota, September 21, 1922.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 20

September 20, 1975 – On Season 6 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the episode “Mary Moves Out” first aired on this date. Mary moves from her old apartment in Phyllis’ (Cloris Leachman) house into Cedar Square West, the high-rise apartments on the West Bank in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis.¹“Mary continued to be a resident of the building throughout the remaining two seasons of the series, which ended in 1977.”²

Now called Riverside Plaza, the apartments were placed on the National Register of Historical Places on Dec. 28, 2010.³
