On This Date in Minnesota History: August 20

August 20, 1914 – A monument to Chief Mou-zoo-mau-nee, leader of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, was dedicated on this date at Fort Ridgely Cemetery in Nicollet County near Fairfax, Minn. The chief helped protect settlers at Fort Ripley during the Sioux uprising of 1862.

Inscription:
“Erected by the State of Minnesota in recognition of and to commemorate the loyal and efficient services rendered to the state by Chief Mou-zoo-mau-nee and the Chippewa Indians during the Sioux outbreak and the Civil War.”
