On This Date in Minnesota History: September 4

September 4, 1920 – The Minnesota million dollar state fair got under way today with a gigantic locomotive collision as the first thriller.

Two big eight-wheel American locomotives were crashed head-on at a cost of $40,000 just to entertain the first day’s crowd.
