On This Date in Minnesota History: September 5

September 5, 1985 – Duluth’s DeWitt-Seitz Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on this date.1 “Built in 1909, the original tenant, the DeWitt-Seitz Company produced mattresses and was a furniture jobber. After World War II the company focused primarily on mattress manufacture and distribution. In 1961 the company was sold and it became the Happy Sleeper eventually moving to Eau Claire, Wis. It is now an upscale retail center with retail stores on the first and second floors and basement with offices on the upper floors.

The building is located in the heart of the Canal Park area of Duluth, which features a multitude of upscale hotels, restaurants, shopping, and the scenic tourist type activities of ship watching, Lake Superior, walking and hiking trail and more."2
