On This Date in Minnesota History: September 1

September 1, 1851 - Cass County was created on this date by the legislature of the Minnesota Territory. However, it was not formally organized until 1897. Cass County was formed from portions of Dakota, Mahkatah, Pembina and Wahnata Counties. The county was named in honor of Lewis Cass, a governor of the Michigan Territory, an American ambassador and a U.S. Senator representing Michigan.
