On This Date in Minnesota History: October 28

October 28, 1992 – Duluth Mayor Gary Doty cut the ribbon at the mouth of the brand-new, 1,430-foot-long Leif Erikson Tunnel on I35 on this date. With the opening of the tunnel, the highway, which stretches 1,593 miles, from Mexico to Canada, was finally finished. As a result, the federal government announced the Interstate Highway System itself was 99.7 percent complete.
