On This Date in Minnesota History: October 30

October 30, 2002 – Less than a week before the election, Minnesota Democrats chose Sen. Walter Mondale to fill-in for the late Sen. Paul Wellston on the ballot after Wellstone’s death on October 25, 2002. Mondale ended up losing to Republican Norm Coleman, former mayor of St. Paul.
