On This Date in Minnesota History: September 24

September 24, 1917 – Governor Burnquist was advised late today of the appointment of John F. McGee, Minneapolis, military affairs member of the State Public Safety Commission, as coal administrator in Minnesota, in accordance with his recent recommendation. The appointment was made by Chairman H. A. Garfield of the national price-fixing commission.

“The state coal administrator will be expected to investigate the coal situation from one end of the state to the other and report on the needs that supplies may be insured and a fuel famine avoided next winter,” said Burnquist.

Commissioner McGee became identified with the possible coal shortage problem some time ago and made a special trip to Washington, D. C. and other eastern cities to inquire into conditions and to appeal for measures to avert a possible shortage.
