On This Date in Minnesota History: April 10

April 10, 1990 - Duluth Police Sergeant Dale Gary Wilson was shot the day before and died on this date after he responded to an armed assault call.

He and six other officers went to a local hotel to arrest the suspect. Whey they knocked on the door and announced themselves the suspect immediately opened fire with a .30 caliber military rifle. Officer Wilson was struck twice by rounds which were shot through the hotel wall. Another officer was also wounded during the shootout. The other officers returned fire and wounded the suspect before taking him into custody.

The subject who shot Sergeant Wilson was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He died of natural causes while in prison on December 9, 2011.

Sergeant Wilson had served with the Duluth Police Department for 11 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and parents.
