On This Date in Minnesota History: April 5

April 5, 1858 – “The Village of Winsted, [Minn.,] was founded July 30, 1857, by Eli Lewis who purchased the land north of Main Avenue from Baptiste Campbell, a half Sioux Native American.

Lewis was originally from Winsted, CT and named the city after his hometown.

The name of Winsted was officially given to the town on [this date] by the County Commissioners after a vote was taken in the township.”
